Personally, I would like to continue with the peace theme and the holidays seem the perfect time for this. There could be quite a few activities we can build around this and with student input and help we might make it more interesting. Remember, it's about building community.

Based on what I have heard with my fellow students, I think that we should go with a different idea provided that the students participate in this blog if and when it is open to the public.

Besides, for some, Peace day was a little overwhelming. Maybe they are not prepared to appreciate the idea of peace day and how what we can do on days like this [Peace day], can influence what might happen in Darfur or another troubled society in the future.

I think if we do a community service theme it would encourage people to be excited and encouraged to be part of the day. We could make the activity about peace as long as it involves community service. Anything that is like Operation Shoebox will be a very good house day. Or We just play DODGE BALL!!! :)

What are some ways we can incorporate peace day and community service? Donate money? There should be something enticing, something students would be interested in.

That is why rather than being too concerned about what it should be, it should be how we get there that should be important, which is to incorporate more students via general student body or the student council, which would ultimately lead for the involvement of the other students anyway.

When we do house day, there should be a sense of belonging to the specific house, where all students are working together, and have them-- or us, rather, to realize that house day is more than just maybe making pinwheels, or writing stories about overwhelming photographs. House day is supposed to be where students from all grades in House One (in our case) to work together.

In all honesty, Peace day wasn't a very effective way of bonding with each other. I think that the pinwheels were too much of need of focus by students that they couldn't even talk to each other and share ideas not only about peace, but different concerns. And the writing assignment was the same, requiring too much thinking in regards to how that kid in the photograph might have felt. Students and teachers alike have probably not experienced a war in their country in respect to actually knowing a child who owned a gun whose country is in too much turmoil. Though there was a time where it might have existed here, but in the most recent times, none of us have.

When we do have our house day in December, maybe we should do it in regards with something familiar to students, not some far fetched, feeling that most haven't experienced.

I believe there was bonding during peace day. When we studied the war effects I bonded with the 7 and 6th graders. I know that when we did operation shoebox i also got to know the other kids. So the bonding i believe is not such an important issue because our entire house would be united to help a cause.

The thing is you weren't in my group. They felt that it was too inconvenient.

Well, I was thinking some day in winter we could have a summer day. It will feel just like summer! We can turn up the heat and play volleyball and other summer acctivitys. Maybe we can plan a trip to the igh school pool! That'd be cool :)

I meant high school swiming pool. Typo :)

If the summer idea doesn't work out, we could do something halloween related. I used to go to Sussex Avenue School and there we split into groups, went outside, and played halloween games. We all woar our custumes and we'd play many games such as wraping the teachers in toilet paper to make them look like mummies. Best mummy's class wins something small like pencils or something and gets the title of best homeroom.

We could stay in those groups and do a scavenger hunt for things. They could be hidden all over the school and whichever group wins gets a prize.

The only problem I have with that idea is it's a little childish. The 6th graders would really enjoy it but some 7th and 8th graders may not. I'd rather do the summer in winter idea, but this would be fun too. We can also play DODGEBALL!!!! ^_^

I just keep thinking of ideas! Maybe we could do something like the olmpics! We can mix all of the 6,7, and 8th graders togeter so they'll get to know each other better and do activities!

We should DEFFINATLY play dodge ball but we can alsop play other games! Basketbal, knockout, soccer, kickball, volleyball, many sports. I really like this idea because, like you were talking about, the kids in different grades would bond and work together as a team! Everyone will probly make a new friend too. I beleive this idea would please everyone. what do you think?

Keep those ideas coming, brygal221! And get some of your friends to join the blog so we get more ideas!

You're in the zone!

Thanks. I was just using my AIM account because I didn't want to create an account but then I decided to. I'm Bryanne Minnella. I think Mr. Chamberlin knows my brother, Joey Minnella.
Anyway, my friend suggested a favorites day. You could wear your favorite tems sports jersey, something that's your favorite.
The only thing I don't like about that idea is that theres no activities that we can do based on that. I still like the other ideas better. Which one do you like the best? Anyway, I'll post any other ideas friends or I have.

In my old school, sussex avenue, the fifth graders faced the teachers in volleyball at the end of the school year. In gym class, the fifth graders would split into teams and have a tornament and the winning team would feace the teachers.

I was thinking that we could maybe split into groups with a varity of 6th, 7th, and 8th graders on each team. Then the wining team could face the teachers who want to play. Trust me, it's so much fun playing against your own teachers.

Zaji Zabalerio said...

Bryanne, the favorites day wouldn't be a bad idea... for a spirit day.

The volleyball tournament is already implemented. 8th graders against the teachers if I remember.

Bryanne Minnella said...

Oh okay. Thanks for telling me. I'm a 6th grader so I'm new to this...
I don't really have any other ideas

Bryanne Minnella said...

What if we have a field day near the summer? We can plan a bunch of games like DODGEBALL!

Does anyone else have an idea? I'm running out...

Mark Beston said...

1 idea of mine is that maybe we could have a sport day like basketball, volley ball, dodge ball etc

Zaji Zabalerio said...

The thing is, how can we apply those ideas to a purpose. Like, what would playing basketball or something represent? Sportsmanship?

What we want House Day to be is something memorable.

Bryanne Minnella said...

Well, I read how people were talking about bonding between grades and teamwork falls in that catagory.

I was just thinking for an idea that would lead up to house day. I think we could do a door decor contest for the day. When we do red ribbon week people really like doing it and everyone tries to win. So if we have a theme we can make the door part of that theme. But i don't know what the winner would get. This would also remind people what our house day is about

Zaji Zabalerio said...

You lost me after red ribbon week, explain again please.

Annabel said...

DOOR DECOR...yes you kno what we won for our thought bubbles well thats wat we should do for other house days. We like decorating our hr doors for red ribbon week and thats how i thought about it.

Bryanne Minnella said...

That's a good idea but, well at least in my homeroom, only a few people participated in decorating the door. Many did not care much.

I think that for a house day we should do project shoebox again or collect cans for the soup kitchen.

Zaji Zabalerio said...

We need something where they are obliged to participate while hiding the fact that we want them to. Lets make the (or us) do some work.

Bryanne Minnella said...

Thats a good idea. As they say, what they don't knw can't hurt them! But what woud we do to help the community that they won't know it's community service? I mean, we can have the students make something and sell it. My friends older sister told me that a girl in her school takes the taps of soda cans and makes braclets, sells them for a dollar a braclet and donates the money to scientists looking for a cure for cancer. She paints them with nail polish and they're actrully really nice! I don't want to steal her buisness because it's for a great purpose but thats a great idea. Maybe we can think of an idea like that.

Bryanne Minnella said...

For house day, we should have a day that we go to each of our normal classes BUT each class has an activity. No work, ofcourse. If we make a fun, but still in a way educational theme we could have some fun!!!

Example:Peace for peace day!!!

So, say I have Language Arts first. In language arts, we can make our own image of peace by writting the letters then, using them to form objects, people, etc. For example, make the round part of the P to form a head, the line to form a body, and then draw a peace loving person. Perhaps that will be yourself!!

Thats what I mean, taking the word peace and intead of writting, drawing out the deffinition.

One more of my numerous ideas are that we have a day where we have all of our classes outside. Students could bring towels, sunglasses and their books! Frelinghuysen Middle School has lots of property and the classes could spread out though out the school ground keeping close to the windows outside our classes in case the teachers need to go back into the building to grab supplies. The weather outside is getting much better, if we pick a magnificent day like today it would be a nice day out. Also, if wanted, we could collide this idea with another one we think of and we would have a day of fun!!!!
